Cars submerged by flash flood at Seksyen 7, Shah Alam

SHAH ALAM, 15 Nov – A large number of vehicles were damaged in a flood that occurred at Seksyen 7 here, today.
Residents of Pusat Komersial Seksyen 7 where most of them are students woke up in shock after finding their cars half-submerged in flood water.
According to one of the car owner and resident Mohamad Izzat Anuar, 23 said that the flood was unexpected and very damaging.
“I have lived here for almost three years and I don’t think that this had ever happened before.”
My car was submerged up until the car seat and It also cost me around RM2000 to get my car up and running again which as a student, was a burden,” he added.
Apparently the authorities did give out warnings to car owners about the incoming flood but it was done at such an inconvenient hour.
“I was asleep and slightly awoken by the warnings but I was too sleepy to pick up what was said and went back to sleep,” said a resident, Shafiqah Shaharudin, 23.
For those who were awake, they chose to ignore the warning because they did not think it was urgent enough.
“It was four in the morning and I was still awake doing my assignments when I barely heard the warning. They only said to ‘move your vehicles’ without saying why.”
“At such an hour, many were sound asleep and did not hear the warning,” said Ameen Azizul, a resident of Pusat Komersial.
Ameen, 23 also added that the authorities could have carried out a more thorough and specified warning system such as going from block to block, ensuring everyone knows about it.
“They could also have said that there was a flood coming so that the warning could have been taken seriously and residents not hesitating or ignoring the seemingly unimportant warning,” added Ameen.
The flood covered almost the entire area of Shah Alam’s Seksyen 7 with views such as lake water spilling out onto the jogging track apart from submerged vehicles.
It is unknown whether the flood was a result of poor sewage management by the authorities or happened due to unusually heavy rain that night.

Read and think, not read and believe

Good intentions are not permits to simply do anything that goes against law and religion. As we live in harmony and solidarity in our country, tolerance and brotherhood is the root in maintaining our journey in living peacefully together. We practice democracy here in Malaysia and we strongly oblige to the federal constitution as the highest law among other laws too. Same goes to religion; we have one to hold on to as it is the guidance in bringing us to be a better person day by day.

In Islam, Al-Quran stated that:

“Dan berpegang teguhlah kamu semuanya kepada tali (agama) Allah dan jangan bercerai-berai, dan ingatlah nikmat Allah kepadamu ketika kamu dahulu (sebelum Islam) bermusuh-musuhan, lalu Dia menyatukan hati kamu. Maka menjadilah kamu kerana nikmat-Nya bersaudara, padahal dahulu kamu sudah berada di tepi jurang neraka, tetapi Dia menyelamatkan kamu daripadanya.” (Ali-Imran: 103)

Same as other countries, Malaysia faced a number of dark incidents throughout the 56 years of its independence. There are several cases of riots, animosities and protests that happened along the journey and one of the most famous cases was the 13th May 1969 incident. However, the government, under the police and military control succeeded to appease the scenario and rein it back to normal.

However, a significant incident happened four years back contested the credibility of Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) for causing the death of an Indian detainee. Furthermore, the verdict of the case found Inspector-General of Police (then the Selangor police chief) Khalid Abu Bakar, Khalid’s predecessor as national police chief Ismail Omar and three other defendants liable for misfeasance that lead to the demise of the detainee.

Forthwith, incertitude arises throughout the nation especially the Indians where they used this case and some other previous cases as the evidence to contest the accountability of the police force. Taking advantage on this incident, some irresponsible people created rumors and related it with racism issues, adding more fuel to the already controversial fire.

Undeniably, the case showed that professionalism was not properly practiced by the police, but as a forward-thinking and wise society, we have to think things thoroughly and not just simply believe any information that we could find from unreliable sources. Again, the internet was used a spark towards the rumors, further igniting the nation’s distrust and hatred towards the police force.

2011 England riots or also known as 'Blackberry riots' happened after some citizens spread the rumors through messages and social media

The uncertainty thoughts from writers and readers have created many perceptions and hesitation and leads to bigger issues. The emancipation of speech given by the government to us does not meant that we can intentionally do anything we perceive as true. And again, each and every one of us including the police force and the society can molest the law for we are not above it.

The Reflection of 'Filem Kita Wajah Kita'

We tend to believe that creativity should not have any boundaries and the society, in the name of democracy, have the license to express their imagination, emotion and everything. Perhaps, the freedom enables them to think ‘out of the box’ and pierce beyond the common. Luckily the government has given those opportunities, though there are still some acts and laws that prevent the society to go beyond the limitation.

The film industry has evolved in so many ways. The technology changed the atmosphere and brought up the prestige of our films globally. Just to mention some of our best products; Bunohan, Puteri Gunung Ledang, Merong Mahawangsa, Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam, Sepet and Talentime, those films have uplifted the industry by receiving a number of awards on the international level.

However, our film industry has been tarnished with the production of ‘non-standard’ film or known, too, as junk films that only fills the show time slots in the cinemas without contributing to the development of the country or the education of the society. The producers, directors and scriptwriters bring their contaminated ideologies through their films by portraying negative examples more than positive ones.

Some maverick kinds of people in the industry have indirectly created ‘chaos and mayhem’ by producing films that portrays nothing but just to entertain the viewers. They loaded their storyline with too much irrelevant things; gengsterism action, sexual scenes, slapstick comedy, and erasing the root of our own culture with the uses of wrong language, taboo, customs and blacken the mind of the society with superstitious plot. Well, by using the excuse to nurture the society with current issues and problems, they own the license to produce those kind of films to be released to the public.

In the end, our industry is full with films that damages the unity and harmony of the society, instill the teenagers and youngsters with the ideologies of negativity and inculcate their mind with western cultures such as sex, crimes and savages. The medieval time is coming back, where there is no tolerance towards religion, culture and civilization.

Fortunately today, most of the audiences are rejecting those kinds of films by choosing not to watch it. It is a good harbinger to the industry and nation itself because finally, the society has shown that they are not the third-class-minded people who are easily fooled by the film industry’s practitioners. Statistically, the data provided by the Perbadanan Filem Nasional Malaysia (FINAS) shows a drastic decline of viewers and profits for films these past few years.

Though the amount of movie theaters, cinema screens and seats have been increasing every year, the total grossing decreased in a big amount especially this year. According to FINAS, the industry has produced a total of 76 films last year in comparison to only 49 films the previous year. Until September this year, a total of 50 films had been shown in the cinemas. But, the data shows that in 2011, the ticket selling is much profitable if to compare to the year 2012 and also this year. Producers lost millions due to the insipid nature of their own products and there is no one to be blamed for the situation other than themselves.

We are too proud in telling the world that our nation is rich with culture, heritage and civilization since hundreds of years ago. Yet, we are taking the ideas of Western culture and blend it into our society through the portrayal in films that we make. Then, where is the relevancy of using the tagline ‘filem kita wajah kita?’ Henceforth, it is either we change the way the industry produce the films, or we should just abolish the tagline altogether because it does not represent the citizens of Malaysia as a whole.

Who said that films are not an efficient way to teach your children? Look at how the young people are behaving today. It all came from films

 Pengasas WikiLeaks, Julian Assange

Malaysian Oh Malaysian

It is true somehow by the statement of some philosophers that the progression of the nation yields a regressed society. Civilization has been put aside and the society today tends to be more individualistic rather than live in harmony, peace and prosperity atmosphere.

Watching a shameful video of two Chinese men fighting with each other over a silly matter portrayed that Malaysians, or at least some of us are still lack of humanity. The separation of the society naturally happens not just between races and religion, but among it too.  Does it reflect the campaign ‘Budi Bahasa Budaya Kita’ by the government few years ago? Why this situation has to happen?

Selfish is the best word to describe the scenario from the beginning of the video until the end. Ego and perhaps the need to prove their manliness has brought up the small situation into a big one and create chaos on the road and traffic.

Living in a country where it is lived by a multicultural society needs people to be more tolerance and cooperative to each other. However, greed has slowly changed the society by killing the relevancy in human being. By a small matter, people show their true colours and willing to do anything to please their minds and angers.

Well, the selfishness of the society not only can be seen with the situation involving both Chinese men but also by the drivers on the road. Instead of stopping the fighting, people just slowed down their cars and watched both Chinese men harming each other with baseball bat. This truly shows that the spirit of togetherness has eroded from the society.

The truth is everyone should be blamed for the situation that happens, but somehow media as the fourth estate has brought huge negative examples to the society via its tools; television, Internet and newspaper, and in the end, the tendency to live in peace has diminished. Every single day, media, corrosively shows the society with deviance acts such as violence and cruelty.

Yes, we are now living in a place where we are not obliging to our own heritage anymore. The forgotten East culture can only be seen in the museum, not in the people today. Well, someday, we might also forget how our religion asked us to be kind to each other and live together as we are too passionate to fight for our own satisfaction.
